課程概述 |
The physics of solid states or condensed matter is a very important field in physics, materials science, and even chemistry. The subjects included concern both aspects of fundamentals and applications in modern physics and engineering. In particular, they become extremely crucial with the recent development of nanoscience and nanotechnology. This course is planned to highlight the crucial experimental phenomena and foundations as well as the basic concept for the understanding of the physics behind. The purpose of this course should be to establish the basic approach capability of the students with the general background for the further research or application in this field.
Besides the examinations as usual, the course will also emphasize the basic capability of independent thinking and research approach in the solid states physics. This is because the subjects in such fields are of broad variety and require not only the training background from a systematic lecture, but also a more active approach with independent thinking or problem solving in “real world”. In such way, he test/home work as well as the topic presentation would be specially designed.
Test/homework/topic presentation: 40%~50%
mid-term/final examination: 50%~60%
Course ppt files will be given before during the semester.
Text book / Reference:
- C. Kittel, Introduction to Solid State Physics, 8th Ed., John Wiley & Sons, Inc., Danvers, 2005. (particularly Chapter 1-10)
Neil W. Ashroft, N. David Mermin, Dan Wei, Solid State Physics, Revised version, CengageLeraning Aisa Pte Ltd., 2016
H. Ibach and H. Luth, Solid-State Physics: An introduction to Principles of Materials Science, 3rd Ed., Springer, Berlin, 2003.
Other literatures will be announced in the lecture.
